Delivering Change: Healthy Moms - Healthy Babies

In 2011 several startling statistics came to light regarding the health of babies born to Geary County mothers. A passionate group of individuals and organizations within Geary County came together to form the Geary County Perinatal Coalition and took a closer look at the issues surrounding these births.

From the coalition came the Delivering Change: Healthy Moms-Healthy Babies project, a three pronged approach to improving birth outcomes and improving the health of our infants.  Delivering Change aims to improve the health of women during their childbearing years, including prenatal health; to promote breast feeding; and improve infant health.

Geary County K-State Research and Extension supports the initiative. Educational information regarding nutrition and food safety for mothers and infants is below. Nutrition and Food Safety for Expectant and Breast Feeding Moms

The USDA ChooseMyPlate.gov website contains a wealth of information to guide consumers in making healthy choices when it comes to their nutritional needs.  You can also custom design MyPlate recommendations for yourself on the interactive site.

Food Safety

Food safety is important for everyone - but especially importantly for you and your unborn child.  Food Safety for Pregnant Women is a USDA publication designed to provide practical guidance on how to reduce your risk of foodborne illness. It contains information on transporting foods, eating out, and handling and preparing food safely.
